Today, a particularly lively and warm atmosphere filled the National Centre for Mental Health – the Outpatient Centre’s conference hall hosted a “Light Chess,” or Dice Chess, game afternoon, with both staff and patients taking part together.
Three hours flew by unnoticed – laughter, enthusiasm, surprises, and a friendly competitive spirit filled the entire hall. In total, we played four rounds with eight games, and it must be said – the excitement was so great that there was no shortage of emotion or loud laughter at the tables. It was especially gratifying to see several budding “dice chess” talents take part, players who had never tried the game before but who were already playing with genuine passion and strategic flair after just the first few matches.
Dice Chess, or “Light Chess,” is a special variation of chess that adds an element of chance and surprise to the classic game – dice. Before each move, a die is rolled to determine which piece can be moved at that moment. This makes the game more dynamic, more unpredictable, and more accessible to those who have never played classical chess before. Dice Chess combines logical thinking, strategy, and an element of luck, creating a truly engaging and friendly playing experience.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Latvian Dice Chess Federation, and especially to Matīss and Larisa, for their responsiveness and their contribution to making this event happen. They not only came to us with all the equipment needed for the game, but also brought beautiful booklets with the rules, explained the game, helped organise everything, set up the chess clocks, and made sure the tournament ran smoothly and enjoyably.
Another special surprise for the participants were the gifts – Matīss presented each player with special Dice Chess dice, so they can train and develop their skills throughout the year.
The event turned out so warm and positive that already today we agreed – the NPVC Dice Chess tournament will become a new tradition, taking place every May from now on.
Thank you to everyone who took part, played, cheered along, and helped create this wonderful atmosphere. See you next year at the chess tables!
There won’t be any group photos from the event or photos of the winner, since we don’t photograph patients – so the pictures show NPVC staff. But they’ll give you a good glimpse of the day!
